                Scams!!!! 02/04/2010

This is a huge problem in entertainment! There are a lot of people out there who will sell you on your dreams for money and never help you fulfill them. I will discuss a few different of the most common scams I have been reading about and personally dealt with in the past.

First, any listing in a newspaper or online classified type site. These are great at helping you find student films etc. They also have a lot of people trying to scam you as well. When you submit for something get as much info on job as possible and do your research. If it is a student project get the name of the school and then call the school to verify. If they sound very unprofessional or it it is in a place or the person makes you uncomfortable, don't proceed. I would take someone with you as well and if they don't want you to that is a huge red flag.

Second, getting discovered at a motel or hotel. You hear an ad on the radio about talent scouts looking for the next famous person in your area. They sell it very well. When you go they talk like it is easy to make it and give all these success stories etc. Then they do like a 10 second interview and say they will call you back if interested. Surprise, you get the call back and may even see some familiar faces from 1st round maybe a lot. Then they will tell you it cost 1200.00 dollars or so to attend and event in this huge city to show case you. I have personally went to a couple of these and without giving any money done my own research on the company with no positive feed back. If some asks for money upfront to represent you, close your purse or wallet and ask questions. Agent generally work off of commission when you get work.

Third, be careful of hidden fees. A agent or so called agent in your area may contact you for representation after your submitted you information to them. They may want to represent you and say they just need a certain amount of money to set up up online to submit you. I have heard of credited agencies doing this as an alternative but if they want money upfront be carfule.

The main thing I can say is use you common sense and research, research, research.  I will touch on this topic more because it is a huge problem in the entertainment industry.

                Good luck and be safe!!!
